Ben Tanaka is originally from Europe, holding a British passport and having been born in Germany and raised in Spain. He moved to Sendai in July 2000 and has worked in education since. He was an ALT for the Sendai Board of Education, then Chief ALT Advisor for Miyagi. From 2009 to 2022, he worked at Tohoku University. He presents at conferences and is interested in teaching English to children, phonics, reading instruction, extensive reading, teaching effectiveness, curriculum change, and the English education system in Japan. Since 2003, he has been helping his wife run her English school, Cambridge English in Sendai. He co-wrote The Fluency Course, a supplementary course for junior high school students. He also runs RetireJapan, a website providing financial advice to English-speaking residents of Japan.
